Back in the early 70s, Mike Oldfield orchestrated and constructed Tubular Bells, a modern masterpiece. Since then it has been recorded by orchestra, had three sequels and a best of, and been ultimately completely rerecorded. It was also famously used in the soundtrack to "The Exorcist" and the twisted bell shape adorning the cover is instantly recognisable.

Although, as Mike himself admits, there are some rough bits, the album stands up well today. Smoothly flowing along, effortlessly but radically changing tempo and style, it's hard to believe the music was pieced together. The only vocals (barring the howling caveman and some humming) consist of Viv Stanshall announcing a series of instruments as each is introduced.

A timeless classic.
