Pretty much an archetypal 70s post-Tubular-Bells album for Mike. Long lilting sections of guitar, a section of massively overdubbed guitars, some choral vocals, in fact most of this album which you'll hear repeated in Incantations and Ommadawn. Though the following albums are better, Hergest Ridge has its moments... The best part is undoubtedly the huge guitar chorus which starts about halfway through part 2.

The critics apparently panned this album on its release - the excuse often given was that they'd formed preconceptions from looking at the sleeve, but I think it's more likely that they were expecting another Tubular Bells, and Hergest Ridge simply isn't as good (nothing to be ashamed of - Tubular Bells set a very high standard!).
